Cerknica Lake and the surrounding area — including Rakov Škocjan and Križna jama — is part of the Notranjska Regional Park, established in 2002. The lake covers up to 26 km² when full, making it the largest lake in Slovenia, and is a designated Ramsar wetland of international importance. The park is home to 276 bird species, 1,004 plant species, 40 orchid species, and 450 known caves.

Around the lake
A marked 26 km cycling route circles the entire lake, passing through meadows, villages, and wetlands. Flat and family-friendly — the whole loop takes about 2 hours by bike and rewards you with views that change with every turn.
On the water & trails
When the lake is full, paddle through its shallow reed-fringed waters by canoe. Or explore the lakeside paths the traditional way — on a horse-drawn wooden cart, a truly unforgettable experience for families and couples alike.

The iconic hill that watches over Cerknica Lake rises to 1,114 m. The marked trail from the valley takes about 2 hours and rewards you with a sweeping panorama of the lake, the Notranjska plateau, and the Julian Alps on clear days.

A dramatic karst gorge where the Rak river carves through rock to create two magnificent natural stone bridges — the largest in Slovenia. A short, easy walk leads through this stunning canyon, perfect for all ages.
All year round
The lake and surrounding wetlands are home to over 270 bird species. Great crested grebes, white storks, herons and kingfishers are regular sightings. In late spring the meadows burst into colour with rare wildflowers found nowhere else in Slovenia.
